Dashboard Calendar

ROLE

I am one of two UX designers on the product team responsible for assisting in research, prototyping, visual and interactive designs.

SUMMARY

I was tasked to create a calendar that can display multiple institution events all in one place. This calendar was to be made specifically for the Ellucian Experience dashboard.

Disparate Institution Calendars

Most institution calendars are spread across multiple links and files that are hard to keep track of in one place. It’s also impossible to know if these calendars are staying up to date since they usually require a manual upload by an administrator to reflect any updates.

Our goal is to surface all events inside of a single calendar on our dashboard platform.

Defining Our Core Users

We defined our core personas needs through diary studies, journey maps, surveys, usability testing, design sprints, development partner groups. Their goals motivated our design decisions throughout our process.

  • Student

  • Staff

When it comes to institution calendars, we found that our two core personas had very similar goals.

  • See all relevant calendar events in one place

  • Assurance calendar is up to date

  • Quick and easy access on-to-go

One Streamlined Calendar

I was tasked with creating a calendar that can live inside of our Higher Education Dashboard product. This calendar needed to be capable of surfacing multiple different calendars that end users can turn on and off.

The calendar needed to be fully accessible and user-friendly on all viewports.

Survey and Testing

We talked to 10 Students and 10 Staff to learn more about their calendar app usage, device preferences, and feedback on our designs.

App Usage

Device Usage

80% used both desktop and phone to view and use their calendars.

Only 20% used tablet.

Calendar View Preference

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Creating a Development Plan

We shared the feedback and survey results with our product manager and development team. Weighing other priorities and the technical analysis, it was decided to only focus on building our the Day View and the List View for the MVP. This was because 3 Day View was going to be significantly more challenging to build and our core users were gravitating to that design the least.

Mobile App Prototype

Once the development plan was in place, my next challenge was bringing the calendar experience to the future mobile application of the dashboard product. My core focus was on layout, interactions, and animations.
